TIMES JAZIRAH, MALANG – Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Malang, Indonesia, Coban Jahe transcends its role as a waterfall and becomes a canvas that paints a vivid picture of historical courage and resilience. Coban Jahe, standing tall at approximately 45 meters, began welcoming the public in 2014 under the joint stewardship of Perhutani Unit II RPH Sukopuro and the local community. Since then, this secluded waterfall has gained over 300 visitors just in a week. 

Its name, derived from the Javanese word "coban" for waterfall, is just the surface of the narrative that intertwines with the history of Kali Jahe, the river that weaves through the waterfall's legacy.

"Jahe" draws its significance from the word 'pejahe,' meaning the passage from life to the afterlife. The choice of this name is far from arbitrary, it holds a profound connection to the Kali Jahe, a river whose waters once witnessed a poignant chapter of resistance against Dutch colonial forces.

The riverbanks tell a story of a battle where many valiant fighters lost their lives ('pejah' in Javanese), leaving an enduring mark on the land. And you will be able to see the mark once you visit this place though it would be a little obscure. 

Ali Murtopo's Legacy of Resistance

The historical resonance of Coban Jahe reaches back to the time when Ali Murtopo, a revered figure in the struggle against colonial oppression.The guy led a brave resistance in the Kali Jahe area.

The river, which later lent its name to the waterfall, served as a source of strength for those who stood against the odds. It's a living proof of how the local hero stand againts the colonizer back then.

As visitors now flock to witness the natural beauty of Coban Jahe, they unknowingly step into a living monument that commemorates the valor of those who came before. The waterfall becomes not just a scenic wonder but a testament to the endurance and spirit of a community that faced adversity with unwavering determination.

Preserving Heritage Through Nature

The collaborative efforts of Perhutani Unit II RPH Sukopuro and the local community preserve the natural wonders of Coban Jahe. It also ensures that the historical significance is passed down to future generations.

The waterfall, surrounded by lush greenery and the echoes of a bygone era, invites visitors to explore not just the beauty of nature but also the indelible imprints of history etched into its very fabric.

"The ticket is so much affordable, only for IDR 12 K per pax. It's a beautiful place that no wonder I see lots of couple doing their prewedding picture here," Santi of Malang said. 

In the quiet embrace of Coban Jahe, the past whispers its tales, inviting all who listen to witness the convergence of history and nature, reminding us that even in the midst of serene waterfalls, the echoes of bravery continue to resonate. (*)
