BANYUWANGI – Banyuwangi, a regency in East Java, Indonesia, is widely recognized for its breathtaking natural beauty, drawing tourists from around the world. However, beyond its picturesque landscapes, Banyuwangi's mysticism also captivates international visitors, offering a unique cultural experience that is both intriguing and educational.

Recently, a group of students from Liverpool John Moores University in England visited Banyuwangi, particularly attracted by its mystical aspects. Contrary to the common perception that mysticism is synonymous with fear, these students saw it as a compelling cultural phenomenon worth exploring.

Their visit coincided with the sacred month of Suro, during which they witnessed the traditional jamasan ritual at the Blambangan Museum. Jamasan is a purification ritual for heirloom objects, particularly kris (traditional Javanese daggers), which involves prayers, flower baths, and careful drying with cloth.

Rowin Price, an American student from the group, expressed his fascination with this ritual, highlighting how different Banyuwangi is from his home country. "I am interested because Banyuwangi is very different from where we are from. Banyuwangi is a very mystical place for us and is worth visiting," Rowin said through Suci, the group's translator.

Rowin and his peers observed the ritual with great interest, seeing it as an opportunity to delve into Banyuwangi's rich cultural and mystical heritage. He explained that in his country, magic or mystical elements are rare, which spurred his curiosity to understand them from a scientific and cultural perspective.

"Here we are presented with something very traditional that we do not have in our country, a very thick view of culture and tradition," he added. The students appreciated the traditional elements of Banyuwangi, finding them deeply embedded in local customs and traditions.

Besides the jamasan ritual, the students toured the Blambangan Museum, learning about the region's history from prehistoric times to the colonial era through various artifacts. Their exploration of Banyuwangi's past provided a comprehensive understanding of its cultural evolution.

The tour concluded with a visit to traditional houses and an interactive session with Osing music instruments, adding another layer to their cultural immersion.
