TIMES JAZIRAH, PACITAN – One of the sacred traditions that continues to be preserved and honored in Java is Ruwatan Wayang Beber. This deeply meaningful cultural ceremony was solemnly held on Saturday night, August 31, 2024, in the village square of Gedompol. The event attracted local residents who gathered to witness the beauty and richness of Javanese culture that has been carefully maintained in this village.
Ruwatan is a traditional ritual intended to cleanse or purify a person from any bad luck or misfortune believed to befall them. In the context of Wayang Beber, this ritual holds even deeper significance as it not only focuses on spiritual purification but also serves as a tribute to ancestors and traditions passed down since the Majapahit Kingdom.
The Ruwatan Wayang Beber ceremony begins with a process that is deeply meaningful and rich in local wisdom. During the ritual, a figure treated like royalty performs the act of uniting soil and water in an earthenware jar. This jar is then ceremonially broken over daluwangi wood, a symbolic act that represents the origins of Wayang Beber. The daluwangi wood, believed to be the primary material used in creating the wayang has a strong connection to the history of the Majapahit Kingdom, enhancing the sacredness of the entire ceremony.
Wayang Beber is a cultural heritage from the Majapahit era that continues to be preserved by the descendants of the original creators in Gedompol Village. As a traditional Javanese art form, tihis traditional art is not only a source of pride for the people of Gedompol but also a symbol of the enduring values of Javanese culture that have been passed down through the centuries.
As the ritual unfolds, the atmosphere, rich with the essence of the royal era, further intensifies the sacredness of the ceremony. Traditional ornaments such as burning torches, fences made from coconut leaves surrounding the area, and traditional Javanese attire worn by guests and organizers create an ambiance that transports attendees back to the glorious days of the kingdom.
Gedompol Village Head, Susanto, emphasized the importance of the ceremony as an annual village event in his address. "Tonight, we, from the Gedompol Village Government, are holding the Wayang Beber ceremony, which is a historical legacy from the Majapahit era. This is part of our commitment to preserving this invaluable culture," he stated.
The Ruwatan Wayang Beber ceremony is more than just a traditional ritual; it is a tangible expression of respect for ancestors and the culture that has been passed down through generations. Through this ceremony, the people of Gedompol Village demonstrate their dedication to preserving and maintaining a cultural heritage rich in spiritual and historical values, ensuring that this tradition will continue to live on and be honored in the future.
