TIMES JAZIRAH, JEMBER – The Agrotourism heritage site, known as Wisata Kampung Begia or Belgium Village  will officially open on September 15, 2024, in Sumberwadung, Jember, East Java. This unique tourist attraction, nestled in the heart of a rubber plantation in the Silo district, offers visitors a glimpse into the rich agricultural and colonial history of the area.

The site has been developed by the Kahyangan Regional Plantation Company (PDP Kahyangan), with the goal of preserving historical heritage while promoting local tourism. Belgium Village is set against the backdrop of century-old buildings and infrastructure, remnants of Belgium's influence in the region during the colonial era.

“Wisata Kampung Belgia is an agricultural treasure left behind by the Belgians. The village is surrounded by rubber plantations and features houses, factories, and other structures that are over a hundred years old,” explained Heni Ekawati, Public Relations Officer of PDP Kahyangan, during an announcement (11/9/2024).

The historic buildings, along with the unique residential environment and the enduring culture of plantation life, are major draws for visitors. Tourists can step back in time, imagining life in the colonial era while enjoying the beauty of the preserved surroundings.

Belgium Village provides an experience that combines nostalgia with adventure, all within a peaceful and familial atmosphere.

This heritage tourism destination was developed with several objectives in mind. First, it aims to preserve the historical heritage of the plantation and its Belgian roots. Additionally, the project is intended to increase the income of local plantation workers, boost tourism in the region, and attract European tourists looking to relive a piece of their colonial past in Indonesia.

Furthermore, the project seeks to strengthen Jember’s identity as a city of plantations, solidifying its place in both local and international tourism markets.

Besides the historical and cultural aspects, Belgium Tourism Village also offers an immersive agrotourism experience. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the agricultural heritage of the region, including the rubber plantations that continue to operate today.

Guided tours, educational experiences about the plantation’s history, and various outdoor activities are among the highlights that will be offered to visitors.

The development of Belgium Tourism Village is part of a broader trend in Jember, where efforts are being made to expand the tourism sector.
