MAKKAHIndonesian pilgrims has begun performing their umrah and Hajj rituals in Makkah. For this, the Indonesian Hajj 2026 Organizing Committee (PPIH) has issued a critical warning for worshippers.

This warning issued especially for elderly pilgrims and people with disabilities—to use only official wheelchair pushers inside Masjid al-Haram. The appeal was made to protect pilgrims from illegal wheelchair attendants who often operate without authorization around the Grand Mosque.

According to Ridwan Siswanto, Head of Crisis Management, First Aid, and Elderly-Disability Services at PPIH’s Makkah office, unauthorized pushers can create serious risks for vulnerable pilgrims.

During Saudi security raids, illegal operators frequently flee the scene to avoid arrest, sometimes abandoning pilgrims in the middle of crowded worship areas.

“Pilgrims must ensure that the wheelchair pusher they use is officially registered. If not, there is a danger that the pilgrim may be left behind during inspections," he stated (3/5/2026).

To distinguish official services, PPIH explained that licensed wheelchair attendants carry valid permit cards (tasreh) and wear designated uniforms. Morning shift workers are identified by maroon vests, while afternoon and evening attendants wear gray vests.

Pilgrims are encouraged to verify these details before accepting help, as some illegal operators reportedly imitate official uniforms to deceive worshippers.

In addition, PPIH has introduced a special control card system to improve oversight and ensure safer wheelchair services for Indonesian pilgrims. The control cards are used for official attendants operating from major access points such as Syib Amir, Ajyad, and Jabal Ka’bah, helping pilgrims safely reach Masjid al-Haram for tawaf and sa’i rituals.

Wheelchair services are particularly vital for elderly pilgrims, many of whom face mobility challenges due to long walking distances, dense crowds, and high temperatures in Makkah. By using only authorized attendants, pilgrims can avoid scams, reduce safety risks, and ensure their worship can proceed smoothly.

The policy highlights Indonesia’s broader effort to prioritize pilgrim welfare during Hajj 2026, ensuring that disabled and elderly worshippers receive secure, reliable, and dignified assistance while performing their sacred religious obligations. (*)
