TIMES JAZIRAH, MALANG – Prof. Dr. drh. Hj. Bayyinatul Muchtaromah, M.Si is the Professor of Biology from Faculty of Science and Technology of UIN Maliki Malang (UIN Malang), who has discovered the nanotechnology-based herbal medicine.

On Wednesday, 12 August 2020, on the 5th floor of Rectorate Building, she delivered her inaugural lecture, which was titled “Pengembangan Jamu Tradisional Berbasis Nano Teknologi (Suara Upaya Saintifikasi dan Herbal Indonesia)” – The Development of Nanotechnology-Based Herbal Medicine (A Scientification Effort of Indonesian Herbal Medicine).

According to her, nanotechnology-based herbal medicine would give useful benefits and have an important role in the standardization and scientification effort of Indonesian Herbal Medicine.

“This herbal medicine is made of natural ingredients. It is beneficial for health maintenance, disease prevention, disease treatment, health recovery, fitness, and beauty,” she explained.

In addition to that, herbal medicine has an indigenous characteristic from its production methods and ingredients that are closely related to the local traditions.

“The traditional herbal medicines have a bitter taste and low solubility level. Besides, we usually need a considerable dosage of herbal medicine to allow the extract to enter our blood circulation,” she continued.

Therefore, Bayyinatuh had found a solution for that problem by discovering a nanotechnology-based method, which is then called as nanoparticle.

“The nanoparticle will enable the extract of herbal medicine to enter our blood plasm. Besides, it will make the medicine to have more effective treatments. In other words, the particles of the medicine will spread faster in the blood circulation, which results in a more effective and accurate treatment,” she explained.

In this modern era, nanotechnology is now developing rapidly in many fields, including in health technology. The research conducted by this professor would surely have a big impact on the society awareness of consuming natural products. The herbal medicine will be a good alternative medicine that can give a big opportunity for many people, from researchers, herbal medicine industry, to SMEs.

In the closing of the inaugural ceremony, the Rector of UIN Maliki Malang, Prof. Dr. H. Abdul Haris, M. Ag, expressed his appreciation towards the Professor of Biology of UIN Malang. Haris expected that this research on nanotechnology-based herbal medicine could give a huge benefits and contribution to the society. “The nanotechnology-based herbal medicine sounds promising. The concept is highly relevant to the condition during this pandemic,” he stated. (*)
