TIMES JAZIRAH, JAKARTA – Daily food and drink intake play a crucial role in children's health, particularly during their growth stages. Recently, there has been growing concern about the impact of junk food and carbonated drinks on children's kidney health. Could these habits potentially lead to kidney failure in children?

Junk food, which is high in calories, saturated fats, salt, and sugar, is often associated with fast food and has become a convenient choice for many families. When combined with sugary and chemical-laden soft drinks, the consumption of these foods further hinders nutrient absorption in children. However, beneath the convenience and enjoyment lies a serious health risk.

Research indicates that excessive consumption of junk food and soda can increase the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. All these conditions are major risk factors for chronic kidney disease. Additionally, the high salt and sugar content in junk food and carbonated drinks can lead to high blood pressure and insulin resistance, ultimately putting strain on the kidneys and accelerating damage to this vital organ.

The kidneys act as filters for the blood, removing pollutants and regulating fluid balance in the body. When children consume too much junk food and soda, their kidneys must work harder to eliminate excess salt, sugar, and other additives. If this excess continues, it can result in permanent kidney damage.

It is important to remember that other lifestyle factors also contribute to kidney health, such as lack of physical activity, dehydration, and overall dietary habits. However, it is clear that reducing the intake of junk food and carbonated drinks is a crucial step in protecting your child's kidney health.

Parents and educators play a key role in fostering healthy eating habits from an early age. Educating children about the importance of nutritious food and the risks of unhealthy food and drinks is a long-term investment in their health. With the right approach, we can prevent the rise of kidney disease among the younger generation.

In summary, while junk food and carbonated drinks do not directly cause kidney failure, the habit of excessive consumption clearly contributes to risk factors that can lead to long-term damage to children's kidneys.

Let's take small steps today. It's about reducing the consumption of unhealthy food and drinks for a healthier future for our children, especially when it's about the kidney failure issue. (*)
